Chemical Regulation
A European Union environmental standard governs the registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemical substances used in industrial processes and consumer goods. Compliance with reach regulation ec 1907/2006 requires manufacturers and importers to identify and manage the risks linked to the substances they manufacture and market. In the electronics sector, this standard restricts the use of specific hazardous chemicals in circuit board fabrication and component packaging.
The law aims to protect human health and the environment from chemical hazards.
Substance Declarations
Supply chain audits compile detailed material compositions to identify the presence of substances of very high concern. Under reach regulation ec 1907/2006, component suppliers must disclose if any chemical on the candidate list exceeds a concentration of 0.1 percent by weight in their products. This disclosure requirement forces printed circuit board manufacturers to trace the chemical composition of laminates, solder masks, and surface finishes.
Accurate declarations are necessary to maintain access to the European market. If a restricted substance is found above the limit, the assembly cannot be distributed without specific authorization or substitution of the chemical.
Compliance Enforcement
Market surveillance authorities inspect technical documentation and perform chemical testing to verify that imports comply with the law. Failure to satisfy the requirements of reach regulation ec 1907/2006 results in severe financial penalties and product withdrawals from the market. Manufacturers must maintain up-to-date compliance folders as chemical lists are updated.
