Thermal Deviation
Surface mount technology relies on strict adherence to a preprogrammed conveyor speed and heating zone temperature curve during printed circuit board assembly. Reflow profile drift occurs when the actual thermal energy transferred to the solder paste deviates from the validated recipe during production runs. That gradual shift changes the wetting kinetics and intermetallic compound formation across the populated pads.
Conveyor belt wear, fluctuating line voltage, and changing ambient facility temperatures cause the measured board temperatures to stray from the baseline. Component shifting, cold solder joints, and voiding happen when the heating profile wanders outside the specific process window defined by the paste manufacturer.
Measurement Variance
Profiling fixtures equipped with thermocouples attached to critical component terminations record the actual thermal history during routine line audits. Thermocouple detachment and calibration drift in the data logger introduce measurement errors that distort the recorded peak temperature and time above liquidus. Statistical process control software monitors the resulting process capability index to flag trends before bridging or tombstoning defects appear on the optical inspection machines.
Thermal imaging cameras provide an alternative validation method by capturing whole board radiance maps without physical wire attachments.
Process Boundary
Lead free alloys demand tighter temperature tolerances than traditional tin lead formulations because the higher melting point narrows the acceptable operational margin. Nitrogen gas injection alters the convective heat transfer coefficient inside the convection oven and shifts the steady state thermal equilibrium. Board thickness variations and copper plane density differences absorb thermal energy unevenly and create micro climates across a single assembly during the heating phase.
Machine maintenance logs track heater lamp degradation and blower motor speeds to prevent boundary violations from halting the SMT line.
