Deposit Mass Quantifier
Surface mount assembly processes rely on stencil printing to deposit precise quantities of solder paste onto copper landing pads prior to component placement. Solder paste inspection volume represents the three-dimensional cubic measure of solder paste printed onto an individual circuit board pad. It quantifies the physical mass of solder paste available to form a mechanical and electrical joint during reflow.
The metric applies immediately after stencil printing and before component pick and place operations.
Defect Prevention Mechanism
Insufficient or excessive solder paste printing causes the majority of surface mount assembly defects. When paste volume falls below fifty percent of nominal target values, reflow soldering yields open connections, weak solder joints, severe voiding or tombstoned passive components. Solder paste inspection volume metrics enable three-dimensional optical systems to calculate exact deposit heights and surface areas across every pad on a printed board assembly.
Inline inspection machines alert operators to stencil clogging or solder paste depletion before defective boards proceed to component placement machines.
Tolerance Window Parameter
Three-dimensional laser triangulation and structured light projection calculate pad volume in real time. Solder paste inspection volume must fall between fifty and one hundred fifty percent of stencil aperture volume to satisfy IPC A 610 acceptance criteria.
