Tooling Construction
Custom manufactured selective soldering fixtures fabricated from metallic alloys shield heat-sensitive bottom-side components while exposing through-hole pins to molten solder. In automated wave and selective soldering lines, a titanium selective pallet provides extreme dimensional stability and non-wetting properties in contact with lead-free solder alloys. Titanium resists erosion from aggressive tin-rich solders such as SAC301 or SAC305 without requiring specialized surface coatings.
Solder masking accuracy remains constant across thousands of production passes. Wear or deformation of the fixture is evaluated by measuring pocket edge erosion and clamp tension.
Thermal Durability
High thermal conductivity compared to composite materials causes a titanium selective pallet to draw and distribute heat rapidly throughout the fixture body. This rapid heat transfer necessitates increased top-side preheat settings to achieve target flux activation temperatures on heavy multi-layer boards. The elevated thermal mass prevents localized hot spots, minimizing board warpage across wide panel arrays during wave immersion.
Titanium maintains its structural integrity at molten solder temperatures exceeding two hundred and sixty degrees Celsius without experiencing laminate delamination or matrix erosion typical of composite pallets.
Machining Specification
Precision computer numerical control milling produces thin pocket walls down to tight mechanical tolerances, allowing component clearance in dense surface mount layouts. Anodizing or surface oxidation treatments prevent solder adherence on contact surfaces. Dimensional verification via coordinate measuring machines confirms that aperture cutouts maintain positional alignment with circuit board through-hole pin patterns.
