Structural Feature
A dedicated copper area coated with electroless nickel immersion gold provides a flat and corrosion-resistant surface for electrical probes. The enig test pad sits alongside functional traces to allow direct measurement of contact resistance and finish thickness without damaging the circuit. This feature is a standard inclusion on high-reliability layouts.
Solderability Testing
The golden surface protects the underlying nickel from oxidation, ensuring a long shelf life before assembly. Solderability on these pads is verified using wetting balance tests or solder spread tests to ensure that the plating process has been executed correctly. Inadequate gold thickness or high phosphorus levels in the nickel bath can lead to black pad syndrome, which is a brittle fracture condition.
The enig test pad is used to run shear and pull tests after sample reflow to measure the mechanical strength of the solder joint. Because the pad is separate from the operational circuit, these destructive mechanical tests can be carried out on production panel margins.
Defect Detection
Automated optical and x-ray systems inspect the pads for uniform coverage and absence of plating voids. Excessive gold dissolution into the solder can also be analyzed via cross-sectioning. These checks guarantee that the electrical and mechanical integrity of the final board meets standard specifications.
