Measurement Analysis
Statistical validation of inspection systems ensures that measurement variance stems from the manufactured parts rather than the testing equipment. To verify this performance, gage repeatability and reproducibility evaluates the consistency of a test setup by analyzing results from multiple operators and parts.
Error Isolation
Repeatability measures the variation when one operator uses the same measurement tool on the same part multiple times. Reproducibility registers the variation between different operators executing the same task with that equipment. If the combined measurement variation occupies more than thirty percent of the total process tolerance, the inspection system is unacceptable.
This study is performed on automated optical systems and pull test equipment before introducing them to the assembly line.
Quality Application
When an inspection system passes this analysis, the manufacturer knows that the data gathered is reliable. Calibration protocols and environmental controls such as temperature and humidity must be stable to prevent test drift. If the test reveals high operator variation, standardizing training or automating the measurement procedure reduces the human error.
This variance reduction helps prevent the false rejection of good circuit boards and stops bad boards from passing unnoticed. Testing frequency depends on the critical nature of the board design, with high reliability medical systems requiring frequent studies to guarantee inspection integrity.
