Material Specification
Industry standards define the requirements for flexible metal-clad dielectrics used in the fabrication of flexible printed circuits. Ipc-4204 provides the classification system and performance criteria for laminates consisting of copper foil bonded to polyimide or polyester films. It establishes the testing methods for properties such as peel strength, thermal stability, dielectric loss and chemical resistance.
This document governs the selection of materials for applications where the circuit must bend or fold during installation or operation.
Classification System
A specific alphanumeric code identifies the resin type, reinforcement, foil thickness and adhesive chemistry for each material grade. This structured naming allows engineers to communicate exact material needs to suppliers without ambiguity. Ipc-4204 includes specifications for both adhesive-based and adhesiveless laminates, the latter of which offers better thermal performance and thinner profiles.
The standard also sets limits for dielectric constant and loss tangent to ensure signal integrity in high speed applications. Manufacturers must certify their products against these benchmarks to meet the requirements of aerospace or medical electronics contracts. Each material lot undergoes testing to verify that it maintains these properties under environmental stress.
Quality Verification
Standardized test coupons included on the production panels provide the means to check compliance with the physical and electrical requirements. These tests confirm that the material survives the chemicals and temperatures encountered during the etching and plating processes.
