Material Specification
Individual data records found within the IPC-4101 standard define the specific physical and chemical properties required for different types of base materials. Each of the ipc slash sheets details the glass transition temperature and the dielectric constant for a particular laminate or prepreg chemistry. Designers use these numbers to select materials that survive the thermal stress of lead-free assembly or high-power operation.
It provides a common language for designers and fabricators.
Procurement Function
Purchasing agents use the sheet numbers to specify requirements without naming a specific manufacturer brand. Because ipc slash sheets standardize the performance levels across the industry, a fabricator can substitute one vendor’s resin system for another if both meet the same numbered specification. This prevents single-source dependencies in the supply chain.
Compliance Verification
Testing labs use these documents to verify that a delivered batch of material matches the ordered grade. The sheets list mandatory values for peel strength and water absorption that the material must achieve under standardized test conditions. If a laminate fails to meet the moisture absorption limit of its assigned sheet, the fabricator may reject the lot to prevent outgassing during lamination.
Each document contains a table of properties. It ensures that the copper-clad laminate behaves predictably during the etching process.
