Flexible Junction Protection
A bead of flexible epoxy or silicone adhesive applied along the transition line where a flexible circuit meets a rigid board prevents mechanical stress from concentrating on the copper traces. Incorporating a strain relief bead distributes the bending force across a wider area and prevents the metal traces from cracking during installation or operation. This protection is especially necessary in designs where the flex section must be folded tightly during assembly.
It is applied during the board assembly stage using precision dispensing machines.
Adhesive Placement Accuracy
Misaligned dispensing can cover adjacent component pads or make the flexible region too stiff. Applying the strain relief bead requires a controlled dispensing pattern and appropriate material curing. This prevents the epoxy from migrating into active component zones where it could cause assembly defects.
Structural Fatigue Prevention
Repeated mechanical handling during system integration can easily fracture unprotected copper traces at rigid-flex boundaries. By utilizing a strain relief bead, the assembly absorbs the vibration and bending forces that would otherwise fatigue the fragile copper connections. Test engineers verify the performance of this bead by subjected the finished assembly to vibration and drop tests.
This mechanical reinforcement ensures that the final product remains functional even under severe handling conditions.
