Rigidity Profile
Material resistance to elastic deformation under mechanical load determines how much a circuit panel displaces during assembly operations. A high degree of board structural stiffness prevents the sagging that leads to solder skip defects or uneven component placement. This metric derives from the combined Young modulus of the core laminate and the reinforcement provided by copper distribution.
Deflection Formula
Calculating the local deflection involves assessing the unsupported span between fixture supports and the moment of inertia of the substrate cross-section. Within board structural stiffness evaluations, engineers observe that dense multi-layer constructions typically resist bending better than thin double-sided logic boards. Component mass influences the dynamic stiffness during high speed routing or vibration testing.
Large components near the center of a panel reduce the frequency at which resonance occurs. In cases where board structural stiffness is insufficient, additional support rails or stiffener bars are integrated into the panel frame to maintain flatness. These rigid additions prevent the cumulative displacement that causes false failures in automated optical inspection systems.
Maintaining a specific stiffness value is essential for fine pitch assemblies where pad alignment tolerances are tight.
Support Interface
Friction at the edges and downward force at the clamps constrain the movement of the board under pressure. Proper clamp selection maximizes stiffness without inducing permanent warping.
