Image Accuracy
Automated optical inspection systems use specialized lenses to maintain a constant magnification regardless of how far the board sits from the camera. The telecentric lens calibration ensures that the optical system provides accurate measurements of board features and solder joints without distortion. This step is necessary to maintain high inspection accuracy across the entire field of view.
Distortion Removal
During calibration, a reference grid of known dimensions is imaged at different heights within the lens’s depth of field. The system’s software analyzes the image of the grid to identify and correct any residual radial or tangential distortions in the lens. This calibration ensures that the measurement of a fine-pitch component lead on the edge of the image is just as accurate as one in the center.
By removing perspective errors, the system can reliably evaluate three-dimensional solder joints and component placements on boards with high component density.
Measurement Precision
Routine calibration ensures that the vision system provides repeatable results across different boards and production shifts. Without this adjustment, variation in board flatness or height will lead to false failures and missed defects during the optical screening phase. Assembly facilities rely on this routine to protect product quality and keep their inspection lines running efficiently.
