Access Configuration
Electrical test access designs define the coordinates, sizes, and spacing of dedicated probing pads placed on circuit board assemblies. Planning a test point layout ensures that in-circuit and functional test fixtures can make contact with the internal circuit nodes without damaging components. Placing these pads on a standardized grid allows test engineers to use lower-cost fixtures and reduces the time needed to program test systems.
This planning must occur during the layout phase to ensure that all critical nodes are accessible from a single side of the board.
Electrical Coupling
High-frequency signals can be degraded if the test pads introduce excessive parasitic capacitance to the transmission lines. Designers must minimize the pad diameter and keep traces connecting the pads to the signals as short as possible to prevent signal reflections.
Mechanical Clearance
Spring-loaded probes require sufficient clearance from adjacent tall components to prevent physical interference during fixture compression. A well-designed test point layout maintains a safe distance between the pads and component bodies, ensuring that the probe housings do not strike nearby objects. This separation also reduces the likelihood of solder shorts if the probe tip is slightly misaligned during testing.
Incorporating these clearances protects both the test fixture and the board from mechanical damage.
