Quality Assurance
Standardized test vehicles fabricated alongside functional printed circuit boards on the same production panel undergo physical evaluation to verify that the manufacturing batch meets industry specifications. Through coupon testing, quality control teams can evaluate critical board features without destroying the populated or unpopulated functional boards. These specialized test strips run along the borders of the panel and experience the identical plating and lamination processes as the main boards.
It provides a reliable benchmark for IPC conformity and customer acceptance before shipment.
Structural Verification
Cross-sectional evaluation of dedicated test regions reveals internal plating thickness and laminate integrity after thermal stress. Implementing coupon testing allows the laboratory to measure copper plating thickness in high aspect ratio microvias and through-holes. This step checks for plating voids and resin recession following solder float simulation.
Results from these measurements determine if the entire batch of panels must be accepted or rejected based on the structural quality of the copper interfaces.
Destructive Assessment
High-voltage testing of separate test tracks verifies the insulation performance of internal dielectric layers under humid conditions. The procedure subjects specific coupon patterns to high voltage to detect insulation breakdown or moisture ingress. It confirms the long-term reliability of the laminate material before assembly begins.
