Wetting Quantification
Measurement of the wetting forces exerted on a test specimen by molten solder provides a quantitative assessment of component solderability. The wetting balance test records these forces over time as the specimen is immersed into and withdrawn from a solder bath. This measurement allows manufacturers to evaluate the speed and strength of solder joint formation on a molecular level.
Test Mechanism
The test apparatus consists of a sensitive balance that holds the test specimen suspended above a controlled solder pot. As the specimen is dipped into the molten solder, the instrument records the initial buoyant force pushing upward and the subsequent adhesive force pulling the specimen downward as wetting begins. The output is a force-time curve showing the wetting time or maximum wetting force of solder adhesion.
Analyzing this curve helps determine if the surface has been contaminated or if the plating is insufficient to achieve a reliable metallurgical bond.
Quality Metrics
Subjective visual checks cannot capture the precise bonding speed of modern solder finishes. Implementing the wetting balance test provides the objective data required to qualify component finishes for high-reliability assembly processes. This test ensures that automatic reflow and wave soldering processes will yield defect-free connections.
