Core Mechanics
Multilayer circuit board fabrication depends on sequential lamination to build dense internal routing structures through repeated pressing cycles. Successive subassemblies are joined under elevated temperature and pressure after inner layer imaging and etching are complete. Each press cycle bonds an additional dielectric sheet and copper foil onto a previously cured core, creating a hybrid stackup that standard single pass processing cannot achieve.
Controlled resin flow fills the spaces between etched copper features without generating voids or dielectric thickness variations. Mechanical alignment pins maintain registration between successive imaging layers throughout thermal expansion and contraction cycles. Automated optical inspection verifies inner layer conductor geometry before each pressing operation locks the features beneath opaque prepreg materials.
Registration loss during the final press cycle causes open circuits and impedance mismatches across high frequency transmission lines.
Thermal Stress
Resin system selection governs how well the substrate withstands subsequent thermal excursions during component soldering operations. Glass transition temperature thresholds dictate the mechanical limits of the cured dielectric matrix when exposed to molten solder temperatures. Excessive moisture trapped within the partially cured resin vaporizes during the pressing stage, causing internal delamination and blistering.
Press cycle parameters must balance adequate polymer crosslinking against thermal degradation of the reinforcing glass fabric. X-ray fluorescence analysis detects hidden resin starvation zones where inadequate pressure application leaves dry glass bundles unprotected by dielectric material.
Process Control
Final board thickness tolerances depend on accurate accounting for resin loss during pressing and subsequent metal distribution across each layer. Copper density variations across the panel surface alter local pressures, requiring balancing patterns to prevent uneven dielectric compression. Post press metrology measures total thickness and dielectric spacing to confirm compliance with electrical performance models.
Automated routing machines excise test coupons for microsection analysis, confirming interlayer bond integrity and dielectric thickness dimensions.
